Can we add palmoilscorecard.panda.org to the directory? It rates companies based on the how much unsustainable palm oil do they use in their products.

The Age of Stupid under documentaries.

Franny Armstrong made this documentary 10 years ago. If you watch it now, you’ll see how little has changed since then and how closer we are to that fatidic 2055.

Cautionary look at our changing climate, and mankind’s lack of foresight.

Started as a mobile app for ethical clothing directory, now I think is still the same even tho it looks so much different and much more like a magazine rather than an app directory.

One more general thought:
In the resource page there’s a “Submit” button that link to this page.
Maybe is better to send users to a public online form that doesn’t require them to signup? One might be interested to give a one-time help but not getting too much involved thus not willing to invest time in a signup.

It would be nice to see more US-based resources. In looking for ethical companies online, many solutions are in Europe. This is ok, but can make the prospect of trying or returning items (if the fit is poor, or some other issue related to online shopping) somewhat cost-prohibited.

A suggestion: startpage.com for an ethical search engine. They are committed to privacy, and offer the ability to open search results anonymously.

Can we add Protonmail under Email services?
Below are the ethical reasons:

  1. Encrypted.
  2. Open Source
  3. No tracking
  4. Switzerland privacy.
  5. Free** (500 MB)

remove Signal
Open Whisper Systems Signal replaces 1 surveillance system with 5 or 6 walled-gardens and has a substantial history of ethical misconduct. Jami is far more ethical.

remove Loomio
Loomio’s software app may be ethical, but their web service absolutely is not. Ethical.net should be embarrassed to link to a CloudFlare site. CloudFlare has a huge list of unethical conduct and harmful consequences. If you want to endorse the Loomio software, it should be made very clear that the website is not endorsed and the URL should link to an ethical repository where the software is distributed.

remove DuckDuckGo
DDG partners with and supports several privacy abusers. It’s sickening who that business feeds. The CEO’s former job was entirely privacy abuse for profit (ran the Names Directory which was a tool to coerce people to share sensitive data about other people). DDG was caught violating their own privacy policy at one point by using a tracker cookie. Verizon (DDG’s partner) was fined for violating its privacy policy. Twice. Verizon funds lobbyists to fight privacy laws. DDG uses Amazon AWS, and Amazon has a long list of privacy abuses including huge funding going toward facial recognition. DDG also includes privacy-abusing CloudFlare sites in their high ranking results.

A far more ethical choice is searxes. It uses a decentralized free software network of search engines and tags the privacy-hostile search results.

The searxes link seems a bit strange though. Why is it suggesting Romanian topics?

The searxes website is a meta search that selects at random another searx instance (but not just any instance, the operator has a subset of instances regarded as good quality), and when the results come back the CloudFlare links are marked. Not sure why you got Romanian topics… maybe it randomly selected a romanian instance, or if you used tor then maybe the exit node was in Romania.

Would love to add my independent trail sharing platform MyHikes

Reasons:

  1. 100% free and open for users to get directions to trails, download trail maps, add their own trails, and find additional park information (additional map PDFs, etc).
  2. We partner with small land trusts and parks departments to help share trail data at no cost to these organizations.
  3. Independently owned, operated, and funded. All trail data is seen as public information that should not be walled off from users like sign ups or paywalls.
  4. Leave No Trace partner - helping spread the Leave No Trace principals and trail etiquette.
